The Seven Steps of InterSpiritual Meditation represent a structured approach to contemplation that draws from a variety of spiritual traditions. These steps are outlined as follows:
- Motivation – “May We be Healthy and Happy”
- Gratitude – “May We be Grateful from Life’s Many Gifts”
- Transformation – “May We be Transformed into Our Highest Potential”
- Intention – “May We be Loving and Compassionate”
- Mindfulness – “May We become Mindful through our Breathing”
- Wisdom – “May We become Wise through our Meditation”
- Service - “May We be in Service to All Beings”
This method is framed within a universal context, allowing individuals from various spiritual and non-spiritual backgrounds to engage in a contemplative practice that fosters inner peace, wisdom, and compassion. By integrating elements from diverse spiritual traditions, InterSpiritual Meditation encourages the formation of empathetic and understanding communities committed to compassionate service for the common good.
Developed by Dr. Ed Bastian, founder of Spiritual Paths, in collaboration with representatives from Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, Taoism, and Native American traditions, ISM can be practiced both individually and collectively. The process emphasizes the principles of contemplation and meditation prevalent across many faiths, promoting a shared experience of interconnectedness without imposing personal beliefs or rituals on others. Through this practice, participants honor and celebrate the diversity of spiritual expressions while identifying a profound unity in their collective journey.
The structured stages of the meditation are guided by the sound of a bell, gently ushering participants from one step to the next. Additionally, InterSpiritual Meditation offers valuable non-sectarian methods and resources for clergy, psychologists, healthcare professionals, and spiritual directors. These tools can assist those who identify as Spiritually Independent or Spiritual but not Religious (SBNR) in crafting their own spiritual practices informed by one or more wisdom traditions.
